Winter appears to be descending upon on us all so naturally we look towards the next time we’ll bask in the sunshine. We thought this would be a perfect opportunity to help you plan the next big summer adventure and where better than the amazing destination of Borneo, in Malaysia.
With many of us holding tightly onto those precious limited days of annual leave and wanting to see as much of the world as possible Borneo will give you the feeling you are on a backpackers adventure in the space of just two weeks, without having to take that expensive ‘gap yearrrrrr’.
Take a flight to the city of Kuala Lumpur and venture forth into the incredible world that is Borneo – with its natural beauty, wildlife sanctuaries and untouched beaches – you will fall in love with Borneo and the people….plus get an amazing tan, win!
Here are some solid reasons why we think you should visit Borneo, pictures from the Nonchalant London Teams adventures:
Wildlife – Orang-utans
Travel to Sandakan to the ‘Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre’, in North Borneo, to visit the friendly rescued orphaned orangutans. While in the town of Sandakan we recommend spending a few nights in the ‘Sepilok Nature Resort’ – absolutely beautiful wooden lodges built amongst the jungle.
Take an internal flight to the town of Kota Kinablu and walk along to the evening fish markets where you can choose from an assortment of fish caught that day – the local fishmongers will cook it there and then. Bloody lovely. We highly recommend hitting ‘El Centro’ bar just round the corner for some cocktails, shots and amazing music.
Kayaking through the jungle, jungle treks, snorkelling/scuba diving in the sea, speed boat trips to spot dolphins, monkeys, crocodiles and fireflies (we recommend booking these trips in Kuching, South Borneo).Visit and dine with the local villagers. Go get yourself a tattoo at Pengayau ink Tattoo (Kuching) amazing and such friendly tattoo artists!
City – Kuala Lumpur
If you want some city excursions as well before you fly home spend a day or two in Kuala Lumpur, hit the market for a variety of local goods, branded items and near enough anything you want! The Bat Caves is a popular outing – a combination of gigantic statues, a million trillion steps, stunning natural cave structures and throw in some naughty monkeys (a short taxi journey from the city centre).
So to conclude – make Borneo your next summer adventure!!!
